Identity has gone digital
Opening a bank account, getting a SIM or filing taxes now happens online. That makes life easier, but it also means your identity data needs more protection.
Key building blocks
- eKYC: verifying your identity electronically, often with Aadhaar OTP or video KYC
- DigiLocker: official digital copies of your documents, issued directly by the authorities
- Masked Aadhaar: a copy that hides the first eight digits of your number, safer to share
- Digital Signature Certificates: legally valid electronic signatures issued by licensed Certifying Authorities under the IT Act, 2000
Protect yourself
- Share a masked Aadhaar instead of a full copy when you can
- Lock your Aadhaar biometrics when you are not using them
- Never share OTPs, and be wary of KYC update calls and messages
- Keep your DSC token and PIN to yourself
